Recently I was able to get hold of a el-cheapo Android ICS (Icecream Sandwich) based tablet of my nephew, who got his from a abroad trip. I’ve heard lots about cheap android tablets but this was my first one in the flesh to put it literally.
It’s made of shiny plastic and was a glossy white. The 7″ capacitive touchscreen with 800 x 480 pixels and powered by a 1 Ghz processor and 512 MB RAM was quite smooth to work and fiddle around. It’s plain vanilla android ICS so the interface was nice and clean. There was the usual set of capacitive keys at the bottom. The camera at the front was nothing great.
Data connectivity was using Wifi or through external 3G dongles and quite a number of Huawei / ZTE dongles were supported. Android Market was available to download apps and games. But browsing was not a enjoyable experience in the in-built browser. Pleasantly the videos / games played smoothly enough.
So for around 6000/- INR its a good enough buy for someone looking for their first tablet or a backup portable computing device. In my next post, I will point out some cheap tablets available here in India 🙂
